Parents' Internet Guide

The information presented is meant to provide only a basic guide for adults and to open a dialogue about current issues.

Some General Guidelines:

  • Keep your child's computer in an open area.
  • Communicate -Talk to your child about online dangers and let them know you are there to help them get out of a bad situation.
  • Become a part of your child’s online experience.
  • Regularly review your computer files. Get help, if you don't know how to do this.
  • Educate yourself about the Internet.
  • Talk to other parents and educators about your experiences. It will help everyone.
  • Let your child know responsible adults do not pursue relationships with minors
  • Teach your child the responsible use of online resources.

According to the Polly Klaas® Foundation nationwide survey about online
behavior and experiences by youth, aged 8-18:

Most parents have no idea that half of teens (age 13-18) frequently communicate online with someone they've never met in person.
Or that one-third have talked about meeting someone whom they've only met through the Internet.
Or that nearly one in eight have learned that someone they were communicating with online was an adult pretending to be younger.
